It Takes A Village
Jeanine Horowitz Academic Scholarship Program: The Jeanine Horowitz Education & Literacy Foundation was originally founded to provide academic scholarships to America’s working poor in order to not only help them, but also their families and surrounding communities. The founder of our organization, Jeanine Horowitz, exemplifies why we need your support. Jeanine Horowitz, who simultaneously lost work, housing and became homeless with her then 9 year old daughter, returned and earned a bachelor's degree in Education and Religious Studies from UCLA . Now she is an educated and ordained Pastor of Solutions Christian Church at The Salvation Army where she once lived. Unforgettable stories like Horowitz's would never have come to fruition without financial support; that’s why our foundation remains dedicated to helping other working poor families. We provide academic scholarships that include stipends for: full-tuition, housing (in close proximity to the university) and textbook costs throughout the school year. We help Americans gain the necessary education and work experience to compete in the work force which enables them to become self-sufficient, and ultimately provides an avenue for our scholars to give back.

Mentorship: Each one Reach one
 |
Jeanine Horowitz Mentorship Program: Along with the Academic Scholarship Program, our scholars are required to participate in our Mentorship Program. By aligning with approved corporations, our Mentorship Program provides avenues for scholars to receive the necessary skills to be successful, marketable, educated, and ready to re-enter the workforce upon graduation. We request that our scholars complete 10-15 hours per week of community based internship, in a sector of their interest. As a result, we can monitor our scholar's work ethic, build rapport with them, and enhance their employment skills. At the end of the quarter/semester, the corporation executives submit to us an evaluation about the scholar's work ethic and job performance. Therefore, second year scholarship stipends are contingent upon their performance in the internship/Mentorship Program and a 3.0 gpa requirement. We anticipate that our scholarship and mentorship recipients will earn their bachelor’s degree, strengthen the workforce market, become self-sufficient, and become greater contributors to society.

A CommUNITY that Cares
 |
CommUNITY: Although our foremost mission is to provide academic scholarships for the working poor, we are also heavily invested in developing communities and fighting illiteracy among underprivileged youth, which is why we have a CommUNITY Literacy Program. Our CommUNITY Literacy Program is a national literacy program that serves underprivileged youth by educating their parents about the importance of out-of-school reading habits for their children. Since 2001, the CommUNITY Literacy Program, specifically our Los Angeles Initiative, has targeted over 19,000 family households and received participation from over 2,000 families in multiple cities. As with previous successful years, we will continue to secure participation from: City Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, council persons and mayors, schools districts and principals, fire fighters and police departments, and families within the community.

Sit N’ Read Literacy Centers Program
Sit N’ Read Literacy Centers: To further promote literacy, we set up Sit N’ Read Literacy Centers, a 4x4 reading area in hospital emergency rooms, children courtrooms, and shelters. Also to promote literacy to all, we have partnered with Ocean Front Books.com to provide coloring books and hardcover children’s books for the Sit N’ Read Literacy Centers. The literacy centers include: coloring books, crayons, a colorful rug, and a wall mounted book shelf with a generous supply of the latest children hardcover books. Instead of allowing the pressures of life to consume children who have to sit and wait in hospital emergency rooms, we provide Sit N’ Read Literacy Centers which enable them to wait and read. Like Gideon Bibles are located in hotels worldwide, Sit N’ Read Literacy Centers are being established in hospital emergency waiting rooms nationwide. In addition, we also supply schools that participate in our CommUNITY program with books for their school libraries.
